Hi people. Today Concludes the end of our badminton path for me(ryan) and edwin. We lost VJC 15-2, 15-4 but i think we played best and had our fun for our last ever match for the school.
Our school's badminton have came a long way since i joined over in march of 2004 when i was in Sec 1. Mdm Aini left and now Mr Walter Pang heads it together with Mrs Helen Foo. She's really been an old-timer for this CCa. And i respect her for her contributions all this years. Though i'm, not happy at all with the current teacher(s) handling the club, i believe each and everyone of you would know what is the right thing to do when it is needed once my batch leaves.

Since Sec 1 i've seen all types of teammates/players. The ones who come merely to put a tick on his/her attendence, those who come train hard for self glory in training and Glory in competition, and Finally, Those with Leadership qualities and Train hard for themselfs AND THE Team in Competition. you can easily differentiate who falls in the 2nd and 3rd catagories.
I respect those who belong to the 2nd and 3rd catagories because i know they command a sense of self-discipline and go all out in their training routines.

I've come a long way since joining in sec 1. Back then and in sec 2, i really believed in myself and what i am capable of. I must say i belonged in the 2nd catagory. I just did all training routines without understanding why i'm doing them. I just knew i had to do them to my best of ability so that i could become a better player. That's when i started to win my seniors who were in Sec 3 and Sec 4 then. I think that has been a feat, because i've never really played badminton back in primary school, not even joined it as a CCA.
At the end of sec 2, during the december holidays, i had a vision for the club. I realised that, maybe with self-discipline, the whole team could progress to a higher lever. Because back then, the whole team was totally different from the one today, everyone played for teamselfs and the CAPtain back then didn't really cared or bordered.

So when Mrs foo made me the captain during the December holidays of 2005, I really wanted to do something that i considered ExTREMELY difficult. I told myself i had to be strict, i had to put on a leadership figure, i had to push them, i had to shout at them when i need to. BECAUSE Both ex-captains that i saw, (Edmund & Glenn) NEVER did those things and that was why the team was NEVER united and team oriented. I turned into a person in the 4rd catagory.

In Janary 2006, i was officially the new captain of the school badminton team, i started trying to do what i told myself i must. BUT I WAS SHELL-SHOCKED. Remember 5 rounds warm-ups around the hall? On the first training session of 2006, i called for the team to do the rounds. NO soul responded. i was stunned. i thought to myself, "was it so difficult"? I could still remember, my juniors, Ivan, kelvin...ETC. Just sat on the stage, TALKING among themselfs. The girls were not any better, they didn't even NOTICE me. i was so disappointed, Mrs foo had to shout at the whole hall to do the 5 rounds.

As months pass, i could tell that, perhaps people were turned off by my attitude and shoutings. But i had no choice. DO you people seriously think that i wanna shout at u guys, give u instructions, put on a serious face, Do u seriously think i would wanna do that to MY TEam? But i told myself to continue on, because i could tell that, IT WAS WORKING.

1 Year down the road, now, Today, I'm SO Proud of YOu people and perhaps myself. You people are totally different from wad u were last year, when u were in sec 2. I don't have to repeat Getting out of the courts for warm ups. I dun have to repeat STOP talking and doing ur rounds. I don have to repeat anything. I could tell that perhaps, over the years, u people developed a sense of respect for me, AND I RESPECT AND LOVE ALL OF YOU FOR THAT. i really do.

Look at you people, The girls do cheers among themselfs and behave as if they were real siblings. My boys are so close together. Do you know why before every Eastzone match i wanted a cheer, BECAUSE NO ONE IN BNSS badminton History ever DID that. I'm so proud of all of you. THIs is Exactly WHat i visioned back in december 2005 when i first became captain. I thought it wasn't possible. But it turned into a reality. I really love you guys.

Finally, my last few statements as captain of bnss badminton. I'm sorry, over the years, if i've ever shouted at ANY of you. I'm sorry if i've ever ignored ANY of you out of anger. I'm sorry if i ever scolded at ANY of you. i really hope u can forgive me, because i really believed what u people can achieve as a team. And there is two person in this team that i couldn't have made this team to what u are without them. My Overall-vicecap, Grace has been REALLY extraordinary. Everytime i couldn't control any of you, She NEVER FAILs to help me. And i really respect her as my senior and also as my Vice Captain. And i'm sure u gals respect her as much as well. My Boy-vicecap, Edwin, My brother, Never failed to stand by me in hard times. Everytime i felt disappointed in you people, He would always be there to reassure me that you guys would one day self-discipline urself (which u people finally did). And he enver fails to help me when i've too many things to handle. And i respect him as my weather-shelter and my buddy.

Lastly, thank you, ALL of you, for being part of my team. It really has been a honour for Me. =D

Hi people. Me, Edwin, Ben, Kelvin and Ivan were out playing at bedok sports hall today. we played doubles and took a video. It's 17.49 mins long. And you know Youtube can only allow max 10 mins. So i uploaded the first 5 mins of the video. IT's at the matchtube below.
I've applied for a Youtube Director's Account so that i can upload Unlimited length of videos. Hope they approve it.

In the mean time you can watch the first 5 mins of it. Me and Edwin eventually won the match.

Badminton For Dummies Page 1...

Since Ryan is doing the technical aspect of the game,I shall try my best to explain how the mentality will affect the play.Playing badminton will always be seen as a sport for the weaker ones since it's of smaller playing area and in between rest for professional tournaments is usually about one or two days before the players plays the next match.It is sufficient rest although you can see that basketball and soccer has more rest days in between their matches.Never compare it with other sports because badminton uses quite an equal amount of brain and brawn unlike other sports which focuses more on the physical side.

In order to play badminton all you need to do is to hit the shuttle.And that's how you define a badminton player amongst the good ones.When you play a match,mentality is the key to winning although some might disagree.Every player has a certain style of play,each unique to themselves.

The very first thing you have to do is find your strengths.Maximise your strength in every way possible and work on your weaknesses.

For example,my style is more of controlling the ball rather than roasting the opponents with smashes every time.As you can see my smashing is nothing compared to Ryan's or even Ivan's.That's my weakness,but that's not something I won't do during matches.My strategy is to tire opponents out with controlled shots which will stretch players to every corners before I try to surprise them by doing smashes.This will take a very long time breaking the opponent down and can be seen as risking the first set.And by the way,I'm using one of my strengths which is my stamina so I will try to outlast the opposing players.

To me,Ryan's style is far more aggressive.As far as possible,he tries to get the ball down as fast as possible.It is good for those who are able to recover fast and play a fast game but those not used to it will be shooting themselves in the foot.It'll mean to use a lot more energy and those unprepaped will suffer once the match reaches rubber set because usually people who trains aggressive spend most of their energy in straigth sets to win as fast as possible.

We should never,I repeat never try to copy another person's style.I may likee Taufik Hidayat for example,but I know I'm not as calm and patient as him so if I were to emulate him,it will be a game of defence since Taufik's offence is defence.If I'm not that kind of person,it will do me no good since I prefer an attacking game.

What I observe about our shuttlers is the lack of width used.They don't spread their play,they smash,drops and nets at the centre of the court.This is not making use of the width of the court because of fear that their shots will go out.Try to experiment hitting shuttles to every inch of the four corners.Use this to your advantage and vary moves.Don't just keep smashing at every high balls,instead mix some dropshots or flat drives or even lob back at them.It's no use smashing every ball when you know the opponent is going to return 75% of the shots.

One last thing,since it's the tournament season I bet everyone's excited at the chance to represent the school and earn more points or even to skip classes.Be very particular in training,make a stand on whether you think you're able to play singles or doubles.This is very important because we usually have separate trainings and those playing doubles will need time to find the right partners that gels well with them.Don't always stick to partnering your friends because if you and your partner were to lose,the coach will have blacklisted half your name from the team sheet.

This year,we had plenty of people trying out for singles which means that there are high amount of competition for 3 spots.I planned to take singles but I see the opportunity to get on the first team sheet by playing doubles.And I partnered Bryan otherwise known as Chan Wei who I've never talk to until that period.We gelled well and were never left out from the teamsheet for the tournament.It's a good learning experience for me too and now I'm able to adapt to both singles and doubles better than someone who emphasise on singles and try to play doubles.Besides,it's no harm making friends with someone a year older or younger than you right?

BnShuttler Skills Issue 1

For a start i'm gonna talk about Slicing. I'm sure many of you know wad slicing is. However, Many of you slice a shutter unknowingly. A proper net, drive, lob or smash is done by striking the shutter FLAT-faced with racket. A slice occurs when the shutter is hit when the racket is faced diagonally-flat.

Slicing may be used to fake ur movement from time to time. However, when done unknowingly Everytime u hit a shutter, it is to your disadvantage. Slicing a shutter reduces it's speed and impact. So for example, everytime you unknowingly slice a shutter when you smash, you are wasting your energy as not all your strength is channeled into your shot.

These few examples are how slicing should be used in your strokes.

Sliced dropshot
A sliced dropshot allows the player to deceive his opponent about both the power and direction of the stroke. For example, the opponent may expect a straight clear or smash, but receive a crosscourt dropshot instead. Slicing the shuttlecock heavily will cause it to follow a curved path and dip more sharply as it crosses the net.
There are two types of sliced dropshots - the normal slice and the reverse slice. The normal slice is played so that the shuttle goes left while the receiver thinks it goes right, however the reverse slice requires more of a brushing motion in order to slice the shuttle to the right while the opponent thinks the drop is being played to the left.

Sliced smash
A sliced smash allows the player to deceive his opponent about the direction of his smash. Slicing a smash also allows players to hit in directions that they might otherwise find impossible given their body position on the court.

Spinning netshot (also called a tumbling netshot)
Slicing underneath the shuttlecock allows the player to spin the shuttlecock so that it turns over itself several times as it crosses the net. The opponent will be unwilling to address the shuttlecock until it has corrected its flight. The spin also makes the shuttlecock fall tighter to the net. It will also be difficult for ur opponent to net the shutter over to you as the shutter may be reversed in another direction by natural physics.
